The Economic Development Winning Team, Evans CountyEvans County Youth Summit delegates designed a project titled “Get Your Green On”. This project was chosen for many different reasons. To begin with, our county is in desperate need of enhanced beautification efforts, particularly on the main thoroughfares of our community and the need for a greater community recycling initiative and use of a local recycling center that is largely underutilized. Within our project “Get Your Green On”, we chose to focus on five main themes that include: Your Monthly Dose of Green, Yard of the Month, 4-H on the 4-Lane, Adopt-A-Yard and Get Your Green On recycling awareness campaign. Your Monthly Dose of Green is a program that would provide a meeting each month to educate both youth and adults on the importance of recycling and keeping our community beautiful. Yard of the Month is a program where each month citizens would submit photos of their yards for a chance of winning a gift certificate from a local business. 4-H on the 4-Lane is an idea that would allow 4-H members to help with beautification efforts in our downtown area during the current on-going highway expansion project. Adopt-A-Yard is a program where anyone can donate money or time to clean up an elderly person's yard that can't physically get out and clean their yard. We learned through pre-planning assignments for Youth Summit, that 13.1% of our community includes people 65 and older. Get Your Green On is a long-term plan to get a usable recycling program into our community, along with a more convenient way to recycle. -Carrigan Flotlin, 9th Grade Youth Summit Delegate |
